The mountains, rivers, small villages and bird watching are a few of the attractions that bring people to this area but the main reason why this area started attracting international and local tourism is due to Chirripo National Park, besides having the tallest mountain in Costa Rica. Chirripo National park is an amazing wonder of nature.
After a six to twelve hour walk you will come across a totally different experience from the rest of the tropical Costa Rica, its lakes, rivers, flora, weather and rocks make it seem like Yellowstone Park.
To be able to experience Chirripo you have to make reservations ahead of time, but if they say that there is no space for the time desired, which is very common, don’t worry because they save ten spaces for the people who arrive the same day or the day before
Chirripo is a magical experience but you should come and see it for yourself.
Some facts you need to know if you are planning to visit Chirripo National Park:
The office hours are everyday from 6:30 am until noon and from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm.
The cost is $25 per night for Foreigners, approximately $18 per night for Central American Residents. Two night maximum stay.
The two ways to reserve your tickets to stay at the lodge:
There are 25 reservable tickets and 10 walk-in tickets available for each calendar day (except in May and October when the park is closed).
1. The 25 reservable tickets go on sale every season in NOVEMBER (for January through May) and in MAY (for June through December). There are many individuals as well as tour companies trying to acquire tickets and the season’s passes for the dry season (Jan through May), especially weekends, sell out rather quickly.
There are generally some scattered openings, so it is worthwhile for you to call the park office and inquire if there are reservable tickets still available for the day you desire to hike. (any interested party may reserve up to four tickets). If there are reservable tickets available, they will ask for your I.D. or passport number and that you make a transfer of payment into their account within 48 hours.
To try this option, call the office reservation desk at (506) 2-742-5083 Monday through Friday 8:00am to noon, 1:00pm to 4:00pm Costa Rica time.
2. The 10 walk-in tickets, on the other hand are easier to get if you have some flexibility in your schedule. If you show up early enough the day prior to your hike, you have a good chance of getting a walk-in ticket. If for some reason the walk-ins are not available that day (due to people buying two day tickets the day prior), you are likely to get them for the next day if you are one of the first in line when the park opens (6:30 am).
All hikers, whether pre-reserved or walk-in, must report to the National Park’s Office in San Gerardo to acquire their entry permit before entering the park (up to one day prior to hiking). For more information about visiting the park click here.
Frequently asked questions about Chirripo National Park
Q: If I just show up in San Gerardo will I be able to get tickets?
A: If you show up early enough the day prior to your hike, you have a chance of getting one of the 10 walk-in tickets. If for some reason the walk-ins are not available that day (due to people buying two day tickets the day prior), you will likely get them for the next day if you are one of the first in line when the park opens (6:30 am). A few travelers report waiting one additional day and occasionally two additional days to get their tickets. So, if you don’t mind spending an additional day in San Gerardo enjoying the other attractions here you will definitely have the opportunity to hike Chirripó. Some of the attractions include Cloudbridge Reserve, the Aguas Termales, the Secret Gardens, Cocolisos Truchero, etc. (Check out these activities elsewhere on this website). Q: Can my hotel get me tickets to hike Chirripó?
A: According to the Resolution establishing reservations system for entry to Chirripó National Park (R-SINAC-DG-111-2007), the answer is potentially, yes. In practice, however, hotels have had a hard time acquiring tickets.
Q: Can I hike Chirripó without staying the night at the Crestones Base Camp?
A: Yes and no. There is no camping permitted in the park without prior arrangement and with a guide for the Uran-Chirripó loop. Otherwise, all overnight stays must be in the Crestones Base Camp. You may, however, buy a day pass for $15 foreigner, 4,000 colones Central American Resident. You may enter the park and hike for the entire day, returning at the end of the day.
Q: Can I get up to the top of Chirripó and back down in one day?
A: Some people can accomplish this extremely difficult task, but most make the hike with at least one overnight stay at the Crestones Base Camp.
Q: Can I get meals and sleeping bags at the Crestones Base Camp?
A: Currently there are no services available to hikers at the Crestones Base Camp outside of an arranged tour. Sleeping bags and camping stoves may be rented at your hotel or elsewhere in San Gerardo. Pots and pans, dishes and utensils are all provided for free at the Base Camp.
Q: Do I need a guide to hike Chirripó?
A: The trail up Chirripó is well marked and many visitors hike without contracted guide services. If you would like a guide, you may contact the Porters and Guides association at (506)2-742- 5225, or check out the Guides on this website.
Q: Can I ride a horse up Chirripó?
A: A limited number of horses are allowed into the park for portering services only. The only way up for humans is by foot.
Q: Do I have to carry everything myself up Chirripó?
A: Porter services are available for approximately $35/14 kilos each way. Porters receive bags between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. the day prior to your hike. You must present a paid ticket to contract porter services. You may contact the Porters and Guides association at (506)2-742-5225.

P: How cold does it get on Chirripó?
A: Daytime temperatures in the higher elevations of the park range between 0 and 15 degrees Celsius (32- 57.2 Fahrenheit). Nighttime temperatures have been known to get as low a –9 degrees Celsius (15.8 Fahrenheit)
P: How long of a hike is it to the Crestones Base Camp?
A: If you want to climb Chirripó mountain it is recommended to start early in the morning. The uphill trail is steep and can take up to 12 hours in poor conditions for slow trekkers. Fit, experienced hikers can do it in 6 to 7 hours. The trek is 14.5 km to the base camp and then another 5.1km to the top of Chirripó. Most often hikers climb only to the base camp the first day and continue the next day to the summit.
At the 7.5 Km mark there is a shelter where you may refill your water bottle. There is additional water at kilometer 10.5. At 14.5 Km you reach the base camp, which is very basic with bunk beds, no heating and no hot showers. Though your guide book may say differently, blankets, sleeping bags and cook stoves, are NOT provided in the base camp, so be prepared.
P: What is the elevation of Chirripó? What is the elevation of Crestones Base Camp? What is the elevation of San Gerardo?
A: Chirripó: 3,820 m or 12,532 ft. Crestones Base Camp: 3400 meters or 11,152 ft. San Gerardo Station: 1350 m or 4,430 ft

P:Do I need to bring a fishing pole/rod to catch a trout?
A: At Cocolisos Truchero all you need to bring is a little money. All fishing equipment is provided. They can even cook your trout on site.

A: There is no charge to enjoy Cloudbridge Reserve, though donations are gladly accepted.
P: Is there a bank in San Gerardo?
A: Sorry, no bank or ATM is available in San Gerardo. The nearest is found in San Isidro. Don Ulises in the pulperia (village store) will change dollars for colones at the daily exchange rate.
P: Are there quetzals in San Gerardo de Rivas?
A: Yes! They are often seen on the Chirripó trail, Cloudbridge Reserve and sometimes right in town!
Q: When is the Chirripó Race?
A: The 3rd weekend in February is the traditional date for this amazing event. Over 200 participants race 32 kilometers, from the soccer field in San Gerardo to the Crestones Base Camp and back! The current record is 3 hours and 9 minutes! There are festivities in town during this weekend and over 1000 people are usually in attendance.

Por día hay disponibilidad para 25 espacios reservados previamente y 10 espacios para aquellos que reserven conforme lleguen (excepto los meses de Mayo y Octubre que el parque permanece cerrado).
1. Los 25 espacios que se pueden reservar con anterioridad salen a la venta en dos periodos. El primero es durante el mes de NOVIEMBRE(para reservar los meses comprendidos de Enero hasta Mayo) y el segundo en MAYO (para reservar los meses comprendidos de Junio hasta Diciembre).
Existen muchas entidades al igual que tour operadores que tratan de adquirir los pases para la estación seca (de Enero a Mayo), especialmente para los fines de semana, por dicha razón los espacios para dichas fechas se agotan fácilmente.
Generalmente quedan espacios disponibles por lo que vale la pena llamar a la oficina de Administración del parque y consultar si quedan espacios disponibles para las fecha que usted desea visitar el parque (el individuo interesado puede reservar hasta 4 espacios). Si logra reservar los espacios deseados, se le pedirá su identificación o numero de pasaporte y el deposito por la cantidad correspondiente transferido a la cuenta del parque dentro de un lapso de 48 horas.
Para esta opción puede llamar a la oficina de reservaciones al (506)2-742-5083 de Lunes a Viernes de 8:00 a.m. hasta mediodía, de 1:00 p.m. hasta las 4:00 p.m., hora de Costa Rica.
2. La otra opción son los 10 espacios reservados a aquellos que por desconocimiento de las reglas ingresen el día anterior. Estos son mas fáciles de obtener si su horario es flexible. Si llega el día anterior a su visita al parque existe una gran posibilidad de que puede adquirir su espacio. Si por alguna razón esta opción no esta disponible para el día deseado (debido a que las personas que llegaron el día anterior a usted compren un tiquete para dos noches), los puede obtener para el día siguiente si es el primero en llegar cuando la oficina abre (6:30 a.m.)
Todos los visitantes al parque, sea que ingresen por la opción uno o dos, deben reportarse a la Oficinal Nacional del Parque en San Gerardo para adquirir el permiso de entrada al Parque.

Sin embargo, si a usted no le molesta quedarse en San Gerardo un día mas y disfrutar de las atracciones que esta zona tiene para ofrecer, es muy probable que usted logre visitar El Chirripó. P: Puede el hotel donde me hospedo adquirir los tiquetes por mi?
De acuerdo con la Resolución que establece el sistema de reservaciones para ingresar al Parque Nacional Chirripó (R-SINAC-DG-111-2007), la respuesta es que, si. En la practica, sin embargo, a los hoteles se les dificulta grandemente adquirir dichos tiquetes.
P: Puedo visitar el Chirripo sin tener que quedarme en Base Crestones?
Si y no. Acampar no es permitido dentro del Parque sin previo aviso y sin un guía, específicamente para los que se dirigen por la ruta Uran-Chirripó. De otro modo todas las personas que se queden de un día para otro, deben alojarse en la Base Crestones. Sin embargo, se puede obtener un pase de ingreso al parque por un valor de $15 para extranjeros y 4000C para Residentes Centroamericanos, esto debe ser durante el día pero regresando al finalizar el día.
P: Podré realizar la caminata hasta la cima del Chirripo y regresar en un día?
Algunos, pueden realizar esta extremadamente difícil meta, pero la mayoría realizan la caminata con estadía de por lo menos una noche en el albergue Base Crestones.
P: Puedo adquirir comida y bolsas para dormir en el Albergue Base Crestones?
Actualmente no se brindan los servicios básicos de alimentación o alquiler de bolsas para dormir a los visitantes del Parque al menos que estén viajando dentro de un paquete ofrecido en un tour. Se pueden alquilar bolsas de dormir y cocinas para acampar en su hotel o en San Gerardo. En la Base Crestones hay ollas, sartenes, platos y utensilios a su disponibilidad.
P: Necesito un guía para visitar el Chirripó?
El sendero al Chirripó esta bien señalado y muchos de los caminantes visitan el Parque sin los servicios de un guía. Si a usted le gustaría contratar un guía, puede llamar a la oficina de guías y porteadores al teléfono (506)- 2742 -5225.
P: Puedo contar con un caballo para ser transportada(o) hasta el Chirripó?
Existe un numero de caballos que pueden hacer ingreso al parque es limitado y son utilizados para servicios de acarreo específicamente. La única forma para las personas de llegar hasta el Chirripó es caminando.
P: Tengo llevar mi carga yo mismo?
El servicio de porteadores esta disponible por $35 para cargar 14 kilos en cada dirección. Los porteadores reciben la carga entre 2 a 6 de la tarde el día antes de su caminata. Debe presentar su entrada al Parque ya cancelada para poder contratar sus servicios. Durante el día las temperaturas en las partes mas elevadas del parque varían entre 0 y 15 grados Celsius (32- 57.2 Fahrenheit). Durante la noche las temperaturas han llegado a los -9 grados Celsius(15.8 Fahrenheit)
P: Que tan largo es el recorrido hasta Base Crestones?
Se recomienda empezar el recorrido a primera hora de la mañana. El sendero es cuesta arriba y se puede llevar hasta 12 horas en malas condiciones para los caminantes lentos. Caminantes experimentados y en forma tardan alrededor de 6 a 7 horas. El recorrido es de 14.5 km hasta la base Crestones y otros 5.1 km hasta la cima del Chirripó. Frecuentemente, los caminantes suben hasta la Base Crestones el primer día y el próximo día se encaminan hacia la cima.
En el kilómetro 7.5 hay un albergue donde se puede llenar la botella de agua. Hay mas agua en el kilómetro 10.5. En el kilómetro 14.5 se ha llegado a Base Crestones. Este albergue es muy básico, tiene camarotes, no hay calefacción ni agua caliente. Aunque su libro de guía turística diga que en la base se proveen cobijas, bolsas de dormir y cocinas, la información es errónea, así que este preparado.

Si! Muy frecuentemente se ven en el sendero al Chirripó, en la Reserva Cloudbridge y algunas veces justo en el pueblo.

Comúnmente la fecha para este maravilloso evento esta en el 3er fin de semana de Febrero. Mas de 200 participantes corren 32 kilometros, dando inicio en la plaza de San Gerardo hasta Base Crestones y de regreso. El record actual se registra en 3 horas y 9 minutos! Hay una serie de festividades en el pueblo al que llegan un aproximado de 1000 personas.
